Welcome

Dear IEEFA Asia Community,

As fast-paced changes impact the global energy landscape, our analysts highlight the latest trends, risks, and opportunities with evidence-based and data-supported insights into these evolving situations.

This month, we are especially pleased to present a joint report with the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) and RE100 (part of the Climate Group) that examines how Indonesia can unlock more renewables investment via power wheeling — the shared use of the transmission network — as a win-win for the government, national utility PLN, and private power producers.

Our other recent research includes:

  • Changing U.S. tariffs are likely to adversely impact most solar photovoltaic (PV) exports from Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. These changes underline the need for Southeast Asian countries to diversify energy mixes and maximize local renewable installations to hedge against market fluctuations and protect local jobs and economies.
  • In Pakistan, the recent surge in solar photovoltaic (PV) installations has exacerbated grid issues, resulting in financial and technical implications. Proposed amendments to the net metering regime may mitigate further risk to distribution infrastructure, increase grid-based consumption, and ensure transmission system stability.
  • Gas exporters tout liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a coal replacement in China. However, LNG faces intense competition from coal, renewables, and other gas sources. Volatility in global markets and escalating tensions with suppliers like the U.S. have only weakened the case for LNG in China.
  • Our sustainable finance team examined transition credits and the exit of major banks from the Net Zero Banking Alliance. The economic case for the energy transition should motivate banks to uphold climate commitments and support renewable energy buildout.

Please read the analyses in full for more details and reach out if you’d like to discuss any of our findings.

Warm regards,

Paige Nguyen
