Welcome

Dear IEEFA Asia Community,

2024 has been a transformative year for energy finance in Asia. The urgency of the energy transition has never been clearer, with significant developments shaping the region’s path to a sustainable future. Our Asia team at IEEFA has been at the forefront, producing a high number of reports and commentaries ranging from highlighting the continued high costs, market instability, and energy insecurity of LNG, to highlighting solutions to overcoming barriers for renewable energy integration and deployment in Indonesia, Pakistan, South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, and Vietnam. We also published key research on Asian taxonomies, coal retirement mechanisms, and the first-ever comprehensive report looking at the LNG costs for Cambodia.

Our work this year has armed policymakers, financial institutions, investors, climate civil society organizations, and other key stakeholders with the insights they need to accelerate Asia’s energy transition.

We also held the first-ever IEEFA conference in Asia focused entirely on challenges and solutions to the most emissions-intensive region in the world, bringing together energy and financial experts, policymakers, climate change advocates, philanthropists, and media to dissect the economic and financial challenges and opportunities of the energy transition.

2024 has certainly been a busy, productive, and influential year. We are already looking forward to 2025 and to the impacts we can make together with our community of change-makers.

On behalf of IEEFA’s Asia team, I’d like to thank you for being part of our community and engaging with us and our work.

We wish you a restful end-of-year break.

Engagement Update

On December 17, Mutya Yustika, IEEFA's Energy Finance Specialist, Indonesia, participated in a stakeholder discussion on implementing President Prabowo's goal to phase out all coal-fired and fossil fuel power plants within the next 15 years and pledged to develop over 75 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity.

Attendees included the state utility Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and other groups.

Yustika highlighted the urgent need for a fresh approach to procurement to roll out renewables much faster and on a much bigger scale.
